ARTHRITIS

Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. It affects people of all ages, including children. There are several types of arthritis, but the most common ones are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis can make daily activities challenging and may significantly impact the quality of life.

Types of Arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis:
    • This is the most common type of arthritis, often associated with aging or injury. It occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over time.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis:
    • This is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when your immune system attacks the lining of your joints, leading to inflammation and joint damage.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of arthritis include:

  • Joint pain
  • Stiffness, particularly in the morning
  • Swelling and tenderness around the joints
  • Reduced range of motion

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing arthritis typically involves a combination of physical examinations, medical history, and imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs. Blood tests may also be used to identify specific types of arthritis

Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of arthritis but may include:

  • Medications: Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
  • Physical therapy: Exercises and techniques to strengthen the muscles around the joint, improve flexibility, and reduce pain.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, joint repair, joint replacement, or joint fusion surgery may be recommended.

Look for local support groups and resources. These groups can provide a sense of community, shared experiences, and practical advice on managing arthritis.  If you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact the practice.
